How To Know When Your Creative Work Is Finished?

In a community I joined recently, somebody made this post in the Writers group:

"How do you know when you're "done" with editing and it's time to release your book (whatever writing form) out into the wilds?
I've been in the editing mode for... oh about two years now... but I'm beginning to suspect it's just an excuse to not actually publish because I'm terrified. I personally think it sucks and I am also super sensitive to negative criticism (and I know this is part of the realm too). I can be "done" by the end of the year (going through last edits for corrections) but I keep finding places where I could tweak this word, or that word... they aren't really corrections like spelling or grammar or punctuation or format. Again, maybe they are just delay tactics?
How do you decide when your work is "done"?"

And this was my answer:

"Yes, this most definitely is an issue for many, especially - the ones with less self-confidence. And, for decades, was part of my daily struggle as well.
I remember my DIL shared with me what one of her art professors taught her:
"An artwork (and a book or actually any text or creation can be included, right?) is never actually finished. At any moment, you can pick it up and change it a bit again."

The stories that we tell ourselves about wanting to create something if not perfect then at least decent/good enough, are just that: stories.

Our real struggle is with our identity, with who we believe we are, what we are capable of, and how much power over our feelings and identity we give away to "others".

But what if we are the ones creating all our future experiences (including the reactions of others to our creative work) by our (often unconscious) beliefs and expectations?

If that's the case (and it is) we can decide who we really want to be in the future (loving, serving creative people with appreciative following, f.i.) and live from that new identity.

Then, and only then, we are able to follow our intuition that knows for sure when to stop tweaking our work (and making it all about us) and releasing it into the loving hands and hearts of the ones praying for it to become part of their experience.

I discovered this only about half a year ago and am still learning, how not to spend too much time and energy in the old identity created by my old beliefs, but I'm getting there.

And life is much more enjoyable and easy not only for me, but for everybody around me already. So, I know from experience, it works and it can be learned as any other skill."

Any questions? Just ask! I would be more than happy to answer.

Tuesday

Post Scriptum

Remember my big decision?

Two days went by and I caught myself adding paint to a page in my journal and having fun. :)

And my daughter asked me to repair her friend's bracelet. :)

It all feels different than before the decision though.

Putting away all those supplies and tools might have helped the system to really get it that there are no more "should's" sucking all pleasure out of it.

I'm still not returning to any art groups or watching art/crafts videos.

And I'm consciously holding me back from photography, as I really see and experience much more, when I don't try to snatch a shot to share.

Sunday

Big Decision

This is not the first time, that I thought about consciously quitting all things visual arts and crafts at least for a while.

Actually, during the last couple of years, I haven't done much in that direction. And even when I did it, mostly, felt like pushing a huge stone up a hill just to see it roll back again. There was no joy, no energy, no flow in it.

The only motivation was the thought, that I "should" do it because I can due to my talents and skills. The thing is, I have a s***load of them. Except for one: making money with it.

After I got that wonderful transcription job I was over the moon. There is no deadline and the amount is huge, and I'm eager to do it and to learn from it on the way. But, somehow, I could never find more time nor energy to do it for much more than one hour a day.

Although I wasn't doing any arts or crafts either. That made me pretty frustrated. I even asked GP Walsh, if he had an explanation, what this could be about.

He wrote in the answer:
"No explanation, Just let it unfold. Often times there are things that interfere with our growth. Resistance takes many many forms. Don't be concerned. Just allow it to be there and stay aware."

And so I did, but the overall feeling was not pleasant at all. And it all circled around that thought, that I should use all my talents to support my family, although arts, crafts, or even any of my businesses have never been capable of doing that on a serious scale and for longer time. Believe it or not, it has always been only at the very beginning of a new thing I started, when it actually worked.

So, today, I deleted my art page and my crafts page on Facebook, my accounts at spoonflower.com, society6.com and redbubble.com, left most art/crafts related groups there and decided to stop watching/reading/listening to any materials about arts, crafts and business building.

All webinar notes on those themes will go to a recycle bin as well. I'm still leaving my destash shop on Etsy open until the last listings expire as well as my jewelry and accessories in a shop in the town.

I have still to decide what I do with the bead weaving classes I just started to teach. Might still continue doing that for a while. But all the arts/crafts tools and supplies I don't need for that will be put away.

Getting rid of them permanently isn't an option right now, because my son is in art school and my daughter is learning to become a dressing style consultant, so they might need them at some point. Besides, I never said I would never go back to visual art/crafts, right?

I'm still reluctant of giving up photography and the last art related group on Facebook for the time being as well. But feeling deep in my gut that I must.

For now, I'm just following my curiosity, as Elizabeth Gilbert suggested.

And feeling light like a feather again. :)

Update: Left the photography and the last group as well. :)

Monday

A Huge A-ha Moment

For some time already, I have stopped to identify with painful emotions and am using a couple of simple, but effective techniques not to get stuck with them but letting them flow (The Sedona Method, Emotional Freedom Technique, Inner Reconciliation, The Work etc.)

Lately, triggered by an episode of addictive behavior and the call for local artists to submit works to the yearly show as well as The 100 Artworks Challenge by Kellee Wynne Conrad, I was following the suggestion of Echhart Tolle to stay with the emotions that I'm feeling before indulging in addictive "coping mechanisms", to explore them.

And, only an hour ago, I realized that I have never tried to apply those techniques to boredom and abulia. Don't know, why that took me so long, but I'm over the Moon that I discovered this fact at least today. I'm sure it will change the rest of my life. :)

Sunday

It Might Be Finished

Today, I worked a bit more at the painting from yesterday and it might be finished until I decide otherwise. :)

What do you think?

And I got even a nice byproduct: these stripes of paper towel soaked in dry pigments and acrylic medium. :)

Starting Anew

Hi, my loyal readers!

I'm really sorry for not posting regularly and not at all for the past two months. And I really appreciate your loyalty and understanding.

The case is, I needed some time to dive deep into my core being to figure out what's the next thing to do for me.

It wasn't easy, but I had great helpers, GP Walsh being the most substantial one of them. Hence the logo of his wonderful course on top of my side bar.

The Great Spirit literally saved my life through Greg's teaching a couple of times, and provided me with vital help and understanding of Who I Really Am.

Words fail me to express, how thankful I am for that.

And, now, I'm back here and ready to share regularly again. As I'm more in writing than painting right now, there might be more to read than to look at in the next future here. But we'll see, right?

Actually, I have painted (it was more playing with pigments than painting to be honest) last week, so there is something I can show you this time. :)

And, now, I'd absolutely love to hear, what you have been up to lately. :)

Please, leave a comment with as little as one word or as much as a whole paragraph about what has been in the focus of your attention for the first month of this year. OK?

Moving On

Working from home
always inspires me.
So,
We are moving on:
Me and this painting.
Both
loving,
living,
moving,
breathing,
challenging
ourselves
and
each other...
Not finished
yet.

Previous stages herehere, here, and here.

Still A Puzzle

Don't ask me, where this is heading to, because, right now, I'm not having the slightest idea. :)

Would you like to see some of the previous stages? It's possible here, here, and here .

Thursday

Inspired By Music

YAY! I got a pretty big translation job yesterday!

The deadline is tough and I feel sorry for the owner of the flower shop, who is working more hours to set me free for this job.

But it's a totally different work and a totally different money. My heart is just singing!

To concentrate and shield me up from the noises my both younger kids and their friends make, I started listening to this music.

Unexpectedly, it got me painting. :) So, this painting looks next to this right now.

It's impossible to make a better image of it as there is not much daylight here right now.

OK. Back to work! :)

Inspired By The Same Book

Yesterday, I finished reading "In The Shadow of Babylon" by John Schwartz. Still fascinated by it.

This might be another character from it sketched with a ball point pen on a scrap in the flower shop. :)

Beauty All Around

It's getting really beautiful here lately with the colorful foliage and all the late bloomers. As the weather is mostly really nice, I try to enjoy and capture the beauty around me, when ever I see it by daylight.

Monday

Inspired By A Book

Hi, everybody! I' m really sorry for letting you wait for a new post from me, but my life has been quite hectic for the last couple of weeks. Working 4 jobs doesn't let much time nor energy for anything else.

But I promise to write here more regularly to keep you up to date with my humble life. I really miss writing and I miss the contact with you.

One of the good things about the long boring hours in the flower shop: I can read. I hardly can remember a time, when I read so much and so regularly. :)

Right now, it's "In The Shadow Of Babylon" by John Schwartz. And I really like it!

Yesterday, it even inspired me to sketch a young man. Not sure yet which one of the characters it is. :)

Friday

Another Intense Week

This week has been pretty intense again.

I'm settling in the flower shop and practically living in this corner of a supermarket entrance for the most part of my waking time. :)

Thank goodness, they have a free WiFi there and our old ASUS notebook works well enough to keep me online for the boring time, when nobody needs my services.

As I have to work long hours from Sunday to Thursday, there is not much time for anything outside the shop.

But being busy always makes me super prolific. So, not only does our home look cleaner and I cook regularly, but I even reorganized my room and put up an extra table for jewelry stuff.

For now, I don' t actually find the energy to make anything. So, my plan is to use the hours that I will spend in the gift shop for making jewelry. Let's see, how it works. ;)

Because of the life intensity I didn't add anything to my diary for 10 days, but, yesterday, I resumed writing in it again. I feel a real need to do it.

Yesterday, I stumbled upon this article. Seems, like writing has many great benefits not only for me. :D

And playing with art supplies, most definitely, has them as well.

Last Saturday, I gathered leaves in the town and, since than, have experimented now and than using them and acrylic inks on the canvas I started last week adding some texture.

Saturday

Time of Big Changes

The last couple of weeks have been full of big changes for me inwardly and outwardly.

Weather is unusually warm, and on most days - sunny, but the trees know, it's autumn.

Love my hometown Liepaja! It (actually "She" in Latvian) is so beautiful at any time of the year! :)

Step by step, I'm returning to my usual cheerful and hopeful self, that sees beauty and goodness in everything.

And the sandplay therapy is helping me a lot.

And I have a day job. Since last Thursday, I work in a flower shop.

The salary is low and the working week is long, but there are lots of benefits as well. The biggest one: the shop is in a building right next to our home. :)

And things in the shop, that was ready to sell my creations, have started out really well, especially - regarding jewelry with semi precious stones.

The owner is interested in all kinds of cooperation with me.

So, I decided to spend a couple of hours every week in the shop to take in orders and jewelry for repair. And my desk at home looks mostly like this, when I get to it.

But I still started a new painting last night. :D

Thank goodness for the slow years and months before! My life seems gathering speed very quickly right now. And I love it!!! :D

Sunday

Another Tough Week

Last week started out really nicely with great time spent with friends online and offline.

And I worked on this painting.

And I added something to my diary every day.

And, on Thursday, I found out, that I can get 10 sessions with a therapist for free and registered for the first one. And I experienced real support and understanding in the social services.

Besides, the same day, 3 employers invited me to an interview. Two of them wanted me to start working right away.

I really liked one of the tailor shops. But it's a new business, and the income is too insecure.

The third one is a supermarket with really long working days, but at least guarantied minimal wage. Now, I'm not sure, what to do...

In addition, a tooth started bothering me on Wednesday. It has been problematic for years, and, mostly, it stopped aching after a couple of days.

This time, it seems to be really bad. I don't have money for the dentist. But, if I don't get it fixed, I, most probably, can't start working anywhere...

That's why I loved working from home, as I could do it even being sick and in my PJs. But that's not an option for me any more I guess.

So, I'm feeling really powerless, trapped in my body and circumstances again...

And Robin Williams took his life on Monday...

Thank goodness for the great course with GP Walsh! It helps me to hang on. (BTW: I can still get you in for $97. Just let me know, OK?)

Feeling Down

During the last week, I have felt more and more depressed again.

First of all, it might be, because last of our rats died on July 31th and I was grieving (still am).

But my inability to earn decent income is pressing me down even more. Translation jobs are coming in slowly and are mostly very small.

Almost every day, I sent out my application to at least one employer, but none of them even invited me to an interview... Not that I wanted those underqualified jobs in the first place...

But, with every day without change, there is less and less hope in me...

Money is scarce, and the belief, that I'm actually living on the expense of my children makes me feel more and more like a useless burden to them...

When they were small, I felt like they needed me. Now, they might be better off without me...

Another thing, that depresses me, is the isolation. All my friends live abroad and so does half of my family. But the lives of my relatives, that still live here, are hard enough not to burden them with my heaviness...

This is not the inner state that makes me able to paint. I started and finished 3 more paintings, but was not happy with them, so, that's it for a while I guess.

For now, I'm barely keeping up with adding some paint to my diary pages like this, for instance.

Friday

New Paintings

Last week has been really nice for me.

Most of all because I re-started painting after a year long hiatus. And it feel really good to be able to do it again.

These are 3 of the 4 paintings I started and finished this week. The #4 was finished tonight and it was too dark for a shoot already.

Besides, I swam in the sea almost every night and even rode a bike to and from the beach, which was something new and really brave of me. It all brought back something of the happy childhood feelings.

In addition, we got some rain yesterday and the temps have dropped a bit, but it's still warm enough for me to sleep on the balcony. :)

And I had one more sale on Etsy.

So, yes, this was a really nice week,
