How To Know When Your Creative Work Is Finished?

In a community I joined recently, somebody made this post in the Writers group:

"How do you know when you're "done" with editing and it's time to release your book (whatever writing form) out into the wilds?
I've been in the editing mode for... oh about two years now... but I'm beginning to suspect it's just an excuse to not actually publish because I'm terrified. I personally think it sucks and I am also super sensitive to negative criticism (and I know this is part of the realm too). I can be "done" by the end of the year (going through last edits for corrections) but I keep finding places where I could tweak this word, or that word... they aren't really corrections like spelling or grammar or punctuation or format. Again, maybe they are just delay tactics?
How do you decide when your work is "done"?"

And this was my answer:

"Yes, this most definitely is an issue for many, especially - the ones with less self-confidence. And, for decades, was part of my daily struggle as well.
I remember my DIL shared with me what one of her art professors taught her:
"An artwork (and a book or actually any text or creation can be included, right?) is never actually finished. At any moment, you can pick it up and change it a bit again."

The stories that we tell ourselves about wanting to create something if not perfect then at least decent/good enough, are just that: stories.

Our real struggle is with our identity, with who we believe we are, what we are capable of, and how much power over our feelings and identity we give away to "others".

But what if we are the ones creating all our future experiences (including the reactions of others to our creative work) by our (often unconscious) beliefs and expectations?

If that's the case (and it is) we can decide who we really want to be in the future (loving, serving creative people with appreciative following, f.i.) and live from that new identity.

Then, and only then, we are able to follow our intuition that knows for sure when to stop tweaking our work (and making it all about us) and releasing it into the loving hands and hearts of the ones praying for it to become part of their experience.

I discovered this only about half a year ago and am still learning, how not to spend too much time and energy in the old identity created by my old beliefs, but I'm getting there.

And life is much more enjoyable and easy not only for me, but for everybody around me already. So, I know from experience, it works and it can be learned as any other skill."

Any questions? Just ask! I would be more than happy to answer.

Sunday

It Might Be Finished

Today, I worked a bit more at the painting from yesterday and it might be finished until I decide otherwise. :)

What do you think?

And I got even a nice byproduct: these stripes of paper towel soaked in dry pigments and acrylic medium. :)

Starting Anew

Hi, my loyal readers!

I'm really sorry for not posting regularly and not at all for the past two months. And I really appreciate your loyalty and understanding.

The case is, I needed some time to dive deep into my core being to figure out what's the next thing to do for me.

It wasn't easy, but I had great helpers, GP Walsh being the most substantial one of them. Hence the logo of his wonderful course on top of my side bar.

The Great Spirit literally saved my life through Greg's teaching a couple of times, and provided me with vital help and understanding of Who I Really Am.

Words fail me to express, how thankful I am for that.

And, now, I'm back here and ready to share regularly again. As I'm more in writing than painting right now, there might be more to read than to look at in the next future here. But we'll see, right?

Actually, I have painted (it was more playing with pigments than painting to be honest) last week, so there is something I can show you this time. :)

And, now, I'd absolutely love to hear, what you have been up to lately. :)

Please, leave a comment with as little as one word or as much as a whole paragraph about what has been in the focus of your attention for the first month of this year. OK?

Moving On

Working from home
always inspires me.
So,
We are moving on:
Me and this painting.
Both
loving,
living,
moving,
breathing,

and
each other...
Not finished

Another Intense Week

This week has been pretty intense again.

I'm settling in the flower shop and practically living in this corner of a supermarket entrance for the most part of my waking time. :)

Thank goodness, they have a free WiFi there and our old ASUS notebook works well enough to keep me online for the boring time, when nobody needs my services.

As I have to work long hours from Sunday to Thursday, there is not much time for anything outside the shop.

But being busy always makes me super prolific. So, not only does our home look cleaner and I cook regularly, but I even reorganized my room and put up an extra table for jewelry stuff.

For now, I don' t actually find the energy to make anything. So, my plan is to use the hours that I will spend in the gift shop for making jewelry. Let's see, how it works. ;)

Because of the life intensity I didn't add anything to my diary for 10 days, but, yesterday, I resumed writing in it again. I feel a real need to do it.

Yesterday, I stumbled upon this article. Seems, like writing has many great benefits not only for me. :D

And playing with art supplies, most definitely, has them as well.

Last Saturday, I gathered leaves in the town and, since than, have experimented now and than using them and acrylic inks on the canvas I started last week adding some texture.

Sunday

Another Tough Week

Last week started out really nicely with great time spent with friends online and offline.

And I worked on this painting.

And I added something to my diary every day.

And, on Thursday, I found out, that I can get 10 sessions with a therapist for free and registered for the first one. And I experienced real support and understanding in the social services.

Besides, the same day, 3 employers invited me to an interview. Two of them wanted me to start working right away.

I really liked one of the tailor shops. But it's a new business, and the income is too insecure.

The third one is a supermarket with really long working days, but at least guarantied minimal wage. Now, I'm not sure, what to do...

In addition, a tooth started bothering me on Wednesday. It has been problematic for years, and, mostly, it stopped aching after a couple of days.

This time, it seems to be really bad. I don't have money for the dentist. But, if I don't get it fixed, I, most probably, can't start working anywhere...

That's why I loved working from home, as I could do it even being sick and in my PJs. But that's not an option for me any more I guess.

So, I'm feeling really powerless, trapped in my body and circumstances again...

And Robin Williams took his life on Monday...

Thank goodness for the great course with GP Walsh! It helps me to hang on. (BTW: I can still get you in for $97. Just let me know, OK?)

New Paintings

Last week has been really nice for me.

Most of all because I re-started painting after a year long hiatus. And it feel really good to be able to do it again.

These are 3 of the 4 paintings I started and finished this week. The #4 was finished tonight and it was too dark for a shoot already.

Besides, I swam in the sea almost every night and even rode a bike to and from the beach, which was something new and really brave of me. It all brought back something of the happy childhood feelings.

In addition, we got some rain yesterday and the temps have dropped a bit, but it's still warm enough for me to sleep on the balcony. :)

And I had one more sale on Etsy.

So, yes, this was a really nice week,

Dabbing & Doodling

There is not much to show off. For the last 5-6 days, a heat wave is my main excuse.

Temperatures next to +30C are really hard to bear here in the North. Thank goodness, it's starting to cover up and chill down today!

But I'm still playing in my diary at least a bit every day. This is the page finished today.

I'm not particularly happy with it, but I love, that after not touching any art supplies for almost a year, it all feels new to me again.

And I don't know, for how long I will do it in these old altered books, as the pages are definitely too fragile for my method of working in many layers and using a fair amount of water.

Nature Inspired

I'm still not creating much. Would have plenty of time for that: I still haven't found a day job and am not getting serious translation jobs lately.

But not being needed and payed for it makes me feel pretty depressed and not creative at all.

So, most of my time is spent with sleep, books and movies. Would love to knit, but my left hand isn't healed enough for that.

So, I'm still playing in my diary. This is the page finished last night.

It is even good enough for the Journal52 project, as this week's prompt is Nature Inspired. :) Many flowers are blooming here in Latvia right now. And I love them all!

It is all super simple, and I'm not very happy about that. So I feel a longing for getting my hand on a "real" painting rising again. We'll see, right? :)

The Feather Project

Do you remember my post from last week about starting to work at feathers for Yanik's project. They are finished and on their way to Canada now.

As I often do, I chose a different technology than suggested. That made my process pretty challenging. :)

At first, I just splashed and spritzed inks and acrylic paints onto pages from my kids' old school workbooks. Layer after layer.

I had 6 sheets going on at the same time, but didn't want to flood Yanik's project with my feathers. So, I chose 2 of them to draw stylized feathers on with a gold marker.

I selected 6 I liked the most, but, when I started to glue them down, they all started to scrunch and bleed.

Obviously, the very fluid acrylic varnish I used was not the best for this type of paper.

When the sheet was dry, I was happy to see, that most of the feathers looked still usable.

So, I grabbed my scissors ... only to discover, that the good heavy cardboard was too sturdy for them. And my punch turned out to be too weak for the job as well. :)

If I wanted to give my feathers any good chance to reach their destination in time, waiting until I get new supplies was not an option.

So my old paper knife and awl had to do the job.

At the very end, I refreshed the gold marker, inserted a fuzzy yarn into the holes, and sent them out to Yanik. I really hope they arrive in time :)

(Sorry for the poor quality of the images, but day light has been scarce here lately.)

Wednesday

Playing Again!

In one of the Facebook groups I am in, there is that challenge "What's On Your Desk Wednesday". And, after months, I can show an image of my studio desk, where I am playing with recycled paper, paints, and inks for the first time after months. YAY! :)

I'm not sure, why it took me so long (but I have some theories). But I am sure this artist collaboration project initiated by Yanik Falardeau got me starting again! There is still time for you to join in as well.

Solstice Goddess

Lately, I don't paint much, as I'm participating in loads of on-line courses, most of them - not art related.

But do you remember my Solstice piece?

This is, where we are now.

An additional bonus: doing my research about Latvian deities, I "stumbled upon" a lovely lady from US and her blog.

Dark Mother 2

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you must already know, that, last week, I got inspired by the Dark Mother and started a painting dedicated to her, practically an icon, as I had no plans whatsoever, before I started it, and, I believe, the Dark Mother itself guided me to start it and through the whole process.

To be honest, we had some pretty tough moments together, especially, when she decided to show up naked. :) These are some of the phases we went through together.

I'm not sure, if we are completely done with each other already, but we most definitely are coming along well again and this is more or less, how the manifestation of the Dark Mother looks right now.

Now, I have to complete the week 2 assignment for the Introduction to Art course.  As my youngest son is having his graduating party this coming Saturday, I have to push myself a bit not to miss the deadline. :)

Update: We seem to be done with each other now

Learning

Last weeks have been a period of intense online learning for me. Most of the classes were for free, and not all of them gave me much. But some were real treasuries!

The courses I enjoy the most are "Awakening Your Unique Self" with Marc Gafni, the UPROAR with Christina Morassi (a summit actually :) and Introduction to Art: Concepts & Techniques.

Most of my Facebook friends have seen some of my works for the last one, but here they are all together: my exercises for the weeks 1 and 2.

Week 3 starts tomorrow! :)

The Dark Mother

Last week has been a bit of a crazy with my 55th birthday on June 3, both of my teenagers and me having health issues, while my youngest son is still in the middle of his graduation exam session, me having teleclasses one after another desperately trying to launch a new business to start earning more money quickly.

But, after The Sacred Dreamer with Shiloh Sofia, it was so hard not to paint. It feels like it's my mission now to let the Divine use me as a channel to materialize aspects of him/herself in forms tangible to people's physical senses.

Besides, look, what my oldest son sent me for my birthday!

On Wednesday, I was surprised to find a black feather lying right in front of our house entrance that felt like to be meant for me. So I picked it up and tried to figure out its message.

Somebody mentioned the Dark Mother. I looked it up on the www and started to feel a strong urge to create a portal for her to show up. So I started a painting with one of my new inks and water.

Then, I added some more inks, water, and even alcohol. It sounded like drumming, when the drops landed on the stretched canvas, one by one.

I always love this phase of painting the most, the unpredictability, the flow. And all the yummy prints and drops on the paper sheets I use to catch up the excess ink and water.

On Thursday, I found another black feather and the Dark Mother started to make her appearance step by step leaving me in the dark about what she wants until it was the right moment for the next detail to be revealed.

A truly mystical experience. This is, how far we have got today.

Our journey has only started. Stay tuned for updates!

An Amazing Night

Last night, I participated in an amazing event: in a livestreamed painting class with Shiloh Sofia McCloud. It started at 9 pm for me after a pretty stressful day without a nap.

As I had done a class with this amazing woman, artist, and teacher in Life Book 2013 and have participated in the Soul Art Day, I wanted at least try to work together with others in real time again.

It turned out an extraordinary painting and connecting marathon of 9 hours for me! And it isn't over yet, as many are (still) working at their paintings and connecting through a Facebook group.

This is, how my painting (60x80 cm) started.

And this is, how it looks right now.

It still needs some finishing touches, but the main work is done and the main message from my heart depth received: I am a Healer and desire to touch as many people with my gifts as possible.

And there are much more gains for me from last night. The most important ones:

1. the wonderful feeling of being connected to the Divine and wonderful sisters all over the globe

2. no exhaustion at all without any stimulants until 6 am (a proof, that I can create and connect 9 hours on a row even at night, if I am with the right company :) )

3. more confidence about who I am and more trust in my intuition.

I AM EXTREMELY THANKFUL TO
SHILOH SOFIA, JONATHAN,
AND EVERYBODY WHO PARTICIPATED AND IS STILL PARTICIPATING!

Loads of Pondering

The last week has been full of deep pondering for me, as I am trying to figure out my path at least for the next couple of years.

I had my first couple of sessions as a life coach. Really loved them, and the clients seemed to feel much happier and be much more focused and productive after our conversations. One of them said: "This conversation made me very sad and joyful! (We worked with her grief.) It was positive!" The sessions are free for now. So, if you would like to figure out, if you and me are the right team to get you unstuck and move on in your life, feel free to contact me via e-mail: ritajc@inbox.lv or on Facebook to schedule a trial session.

There are still many decisions to make, before my new business is launched, but I am working on it every day and most definitely moving forward. And my Soul Art piece is helping me a huge load. As some of you know, I started it 10 days ago. It has changed more or less every day since then, and this is how it looks now. I call her my inner Mother Goddess.

These are some of the phases it went through.

The Soul Art process has revealed to me so many things about me and the question I wanted to get the answer to! I would really love to become a Soul Art certified guide, but there are so many other techniques I want to learn and get certified at. Decisions, decisions... :)

One of them is about the place of fine art in my life in the next future. If it is meant to be a business, I have to work more on the commercial side of it. But where to get the time and energy for that, if I am launching a whole new other business already? If it stays just a hobby, I have to stop investing so much in it and, most probably, going to the public studio. The place of that studio in my life is unclear in general. The atmosphere is wonderful and the mentor is really inspiring and supporting! But, as he says, he has almost nothing to teach me, as he sees me as a mature artist. And working in the studio makes the creating process unnatural and pretty hard for me. As we live outside the town, it takes time and money to get there. Mostly, we have chores to do before the studio time and I arrive there tired already. And, then, I feel this pressure to paint even though I might not feel, what the painting wants, because that is the "studio time" and I have payed for it. After those 3 hours, I feel dead tired and, sometimes, not happy with what I have added to my work at all. Then, I have to get home and get back to the studio the next day for another 3 hours (still tired from the previous day), because those are the times it is open. What comes naturally to me, is living with a painting for the time it is being created and adding to it when I feel what it wants. Mostly, it takes me weeks and a huge number of short sessions to channel something to the canvas. Another thing I miss in the studio are my supplies. I love to have them all around me to pick the one that feels right at any given moment . It's impossible to take them all to the studio, as we don't have a car and my son has to carry them on his back. And it's such a stress every time to gather them and to predict what I could need over there... For now, I am still going to it to keep company to my son, who needs to prepare for the enrollment exams into the art school but doesn't feel confident enough in the town yet. Decisions, decisions...

A couple of weeks ago, I started the largest piece ever over there (100x80 cm), as usually, with a layer of collaged paper scraps. These are some of the stages it went through so far. It has loads of circles in it, and, at one point, I covered it almost completely with a layer of the Chalkboard spray from The Tattered Angels Paint System.

This is, how it looks right now and I have no idea, what it wants.

To be honest, I liked all the previous layers better, than the current one, but that is nothing new for my creative process, right? The piece might be next to being finished. :D

I know, I know, the post turned out pretty huge. I would really love to make many small posts instead, thought about it every day, but couldn't bring me to it. Have no idea why.

I would really appreciate your ideas and suggestions about my struggles in the comments here or as a private message via e-mail: ritajc@inbox.lv or on Facebook.

Some More Bubbles and Blue

For the last week, I played a bit more with bubbles :)

A new painting on a 60x80 cm stretched canvas was started as always with some home made gesso and recycled paper collage.

Then, I added one of the glimmer mists from The Tattered Angels Paint System - the Chalkboard spray called Decadence.

The next layer was created peeling a couple of cooked beetroots over the canvas and rubbing it in with my hands :)

And so on, and so on, at one point adding some of the Tattered Angels paint called Dirty Martini to each of the bubbles and trying out the new supplies from my great haul as well.

Yesterday, I covered it with a satin varnish tinted with the Phthalo blue paint by Amsterdam using a wet sponge and called it finished.

Another May 2013 Report And A Great Haul

Yesterday, I found another inspired energetic report for May 2013, by Lauren from Think With Your Hart. It really spoke to me. "It's a cold hard fact that the only thing that can move us now is divine LOVE, and because this level of LOVE can be attained from within, there is nothing "out there" that can guide us or bring us that level of uncompromised joy." Read more of it here.

On a more practical note, I wanted to show you my haul from last Wednesday. As I needed to buy a new cage for our 2 naughty rat girls and some canvases, I found a friend ready to help us with her car (as some of you know, I don't own a car or even the licence and we live about 23 kilometers outside the town). So we went to the Home Depot where I found the right cage for the rats. A big and pretty expensive one, meant actually for degus, but the 2 of our 4 rats were taking over my sons room, so I had to do something radical. But I didn't stop there.

I found some great supplies for my art as well: 2 nice small rolls to use like brayers, a good white acrylic paint (meant for kitchen walls and ceilings), and a satin acrylic varnish (meant for wood) to use as fluid acrylic medium. Tried them all out the same day starting a new painting in the public studio. They work just great for me. Both, the paint and the varnish are of very high quality, completely waterproof when dry and cost much less than regular art supplies. As I say sometimes, it's the one huge benefit from living in almost constant poverty for my whole earth life: it forces me to be extremely creative in getting what I need for as less as possible or for free :)
As you can see, I have refilled part of the paint and varnish into recycled bottles for easier use. The pieces of plastic bags between the cans and the lids makes the opening after a while much easier (a thicker one works the best).

Happy art supplies hunting, everybody!
